IN THE FRAME – DIGITAL SIGNAGE DESIGN

Putting Design In the Frame

Our feature series ‘In the Frame’ takes a look at the key elements required to deliver a successful digital signage project.

We call it the ‘8 step turnkey model’.

As the diagram below shows, every digital signage project follows an 8 step process from start to finish. Starting at the top left with Design, the model runs through the essential stages required to complete a touchscreen or interactive digital solution. The majority of our projects follow this process and Yap!digital’s USP or unique selling point rests on the fact that we can offer the full 8 services under our in-house services.

For the client this means a one stop shop = easy … efficient … economical!

In this blog we focus on the first of the 8 steps – Design.

A critical first step. Without proper design the project will at best limp and at worst fail. According to Wikipedia ‘a design is a plan or specification for the construction of an object or system or for the implementation of an activity or process …’.  Design involves an investigative and research phase. Good designers will thoroughly understand the brief, including factors such as usage, functionality, location, environmental factors, branding, etc. Only after analysis of these factors can work start on the concept stage.

Stages of Digital Signage Design

Designs in the context of digital signage will result in a number of outputs as follows:

  • a concept – usually a sketch or series of ideas put to paper.  Sometimes a single line pencil drawing or 3D sketch will be enough to hint on the idea or visual representation;
  • artwork – worked up drawings of the concept including more detail such as colour, form, style, theme, size, scale, dimensions, perspectives, etc;
  • shop drawings – taking the artwork and adding the detailed diagrams, specifications that will allow precision manufacture;
  • prototype –  the result of that plan or specification in the form of a working model of all, or part of a concept including the product and process involved;
  • engineering drawings – ratification that the design specifications provide for a product with structural integrity that meets all the design safety standards

Focusing on Outputs

For some it is easy to see a good design. For others, this is just not that simple. Call it a left brain, right brain thing. Some people are extremely comfortable around numbers but do not relate to design with the same ease!

Our graphic design team combine their thoughts and ideas well right from the conceptual thinking stage to the shop drawings and prototype development to ensure that the digital signage project well designed from the outset.  Digital signage requires the ability to decipher the unique factors around the project brief and ensure that critical thinking is applied from the outset. We don’t like surprises, and we know our clients don’t either…

Once a concept has been approved by our client we will work up artwork and detailed shop drawings. These feature minute details, exact dimensions and will instruct our team further down the line so that everyone is sure of the product and process.

Revisions occur until all parties are happy with the design. Sign off occurs through a formal approval process. All parties are happy and confident in the exact digital signage outcome and can progress with confidence.
